Overview

The Operations Manager, Carrier Relations is part of the Supply Chain Solutions Operations team and is responsible for the development of Yusen’s land transportation carrier base, managing carrier performance, relationships, and overall carrier-facing operations.  

Responsibilities

Carrier Development

  • Drive expansion of reliable carrier base across multiple transportation modes – truckload, LTL, intermodal, parcel
  • Manage existing carrier base through lane allocation strategies, routing guides
  • Collaborate with procurement team on the use of contracted carriers
  • Balance carrier engagement along with customer needs, operational efficiency, and Yusen profitability to achieve optimal results

 

Carrier Performance and Relationship Management

  • Set carrier expectations through onboarding and business review calls
  • Document and maintain process and performance expectations
  • Manage carrier performance, ensure issues are addressed and KPI targets are met
  • Maintain relationship with various stakeholder groups on the carrier side and serve as a point of operational escalation

 

Manage Carrier Operations

  • Manage carrier-facing operational processes and execution directly or through others
  • Collaborate with people managers, account owners, operators to validate carrier development strategies and ensure compliance

 

Manage People

  • Manage a team responsible for overall carrier operations, supervise responsibilities, and develop capabilities
  • Own and maintain operational best practices for carrier assignment, tender, spot buying, spot quoting
  • Oversee day-to-day operations of the assigned team, address complaints, and resolve problems
  • Train, assign, and delegate workload, drive continuous cross training and process depth
  • Conduct performance reviews, make recommendations on corrective action, hiring or termination as needed
  • Demonstrate a concerted drive toward results and meeting operational KPIs as communicated by management
  • Be receptive to new ideas and different approaches to work at hand and drive the same mentality across the team (change management)

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree strongly preferred
  • Five to seven years’ experience in supply chain / logistics / transportation Account Management, Customer Service, Inside Sales/Sales Support, Operations, or related functions, required
  • Three years of direct experience managing/purchasing carrier transportation services
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Supervisory/management experience preferred
  • Ability to drive long distances and/or travel overnight as required.
  • Ability to receive and understand direction from supervision and management
  • Ability to Travel (up to 15%).
  • Capability and competency at the user level in logistics technology applications in the areas of Transportation Management System and other relevant systems/ tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with executives, clients and internal stakeholders at all levels.
  • Strong communication (Verbal & Written) across all levels in the company is required.
  • Ability to work in a complex environment with limited supervision.
  • Ability to work effectively in a matrix environment.
