This position is with NYK Group America's Inc.
Must have the ability to commute to our Long Beach, CA facility.
The position it is to assist with the daily vessel and terminal operations carrying various import/export commodities as listed in the Pacific Southwest (PSW) region as Port Captain. Responsibilities include stowage planning, coordinating cargo operations, and quality cargo handling for the region. Additionally, the position requires multi-tasking in the areas of vendor performance, customer service, port investigations, cargo acceptance, and sales support. This position requires office work, remote work, andvessel attendance in various ports.
Salary Range: $65,000 - $85,000

1. Vessel Operations
▪ Support vessel operations by preparing optimum ship schedules and expenses within the region
and other ports under respective trade’s control as needed.
▪ Coordinate the best vessel berthing with respective Port Authorities and agent for anticipated operations.
▪ Coordinate vessel operations with local terminals, stevedores, processors, surveyors, and customers when
lining up and attending vessel operations.
▪ Share and confirm schedules internally and externally prior to vessel arrival, during port
stay, and upon sailing.
2. Cargo and Terminal Operations
▪ Manage stevedore staff who oversee cargo receiving in terminals.
▪ Coordinate with terminal operator for adequate yard space and daily receiving capacity.
▪ Enforce cargo received by terminals is in line with NYK standards. Ensure cargo is
accounted for, reported and properly marked/staged in terminals for export. Ensure cargo
scheduled to load is accurate, and is reconciled with stowage plans prior to and after
loading.
3. Vessel Attendances
▪ Supervise cargo operations at ports within the region at any time (including. week nights,
weekends, and holidays. Attend operations at other ports as needed.
▪ Ensure NYK’s standards are being observed by stevedores including following load plans,
shifting, and discharge as per instruction.
▪ Cross check and report stow plans, summaries, and actual space utilized after loading.
▪ Provide handling notes for various cargo to stevedores.
▪ Furnish vessel attendance report outlining all pertinent operational information.
▪ On vessel(s) or at port(s), instruct chief officer or duty officer(s) of the necessary
requirements for safe smooth cargo operations while on vessels.
▪ Monitor cargo operation production.
▪ Communicate any damage or injury that may have occurred during the cargo operation
with ship crew and NYK staff in office in a timely manner.
4. Cargo and Port Investigation
▪ Investigate/report cargo handling capabilities for ports and in general as requested by
upper management and other NYK office/teams.
▪ Investigate/report port information as requested by upper management and other NYK
offices/teams.
▪ Provide feedback on cargo handling inquiries, with equipment/securing requirements for
safe handling of cargo.
▪ Support various departments/offices with technical support as needed and assist upper
management as requested.
5. Quality Control / Damage Prevention
▪ Track damages and near-misses, and meet with stevedores on their performance issues.
▪ Work with the Global Safe and Quality Committee members in sharing quality information,
resulting in damage free / high quality service for customers.
6. Monitor NYK agent’s performance
▪ Monitor and supervise local agent’s performance in ports within the region.
7. Cost Control
▪ Control and minimize operational expenses in areas such as but not limited to port, cargo,
and terminal expenses.
▪ Report on savings and expenditures monthly.
▪ Check vendors’ invoices to ensure correct billing and charges.
▪ Record payment and production within the region.
▪ Work with Cost Control Team for advance cost estimations as needed.
▪ Prepare cargo resumes for port tariff payments.
8. Representing NYK locally and assist customer service and sales
▪ Meet and support local Japanese OEM customers’ inquiries in the PSW region.
▪ Visit customers in the region on behalf of Sales Manager if requested by Japan Sales.
▪ Network with local Port Authorities, Shipping Associations, and local administrations,
pilots, agents, tug companies.
▪ Maintain close contact and long lasting relationship with local customers.

WORK EXPERIENCE (Years of experience in the industry and functional area)
▪ Minimum three (3) years in industry experience, sailing, superintendent in stevedore company, or ship agent experience is preferred.
PREFERRED EDUCATION
Bachelor's degree required or currently enrolled and attending in pursuit of degree at time of employment.
